Understanding Zimbabwe company tax
Profit before tax vs taxable income
Accounting profit follows accounting standards. Taxable income follows the Income Tax Act. The two differ because some expenses are not deductible, some income is exempt and capital expenditure is relieved through capital allowances.
What is a tax add-back?
An add-back reverses an expense that reduced accounting profit but is not allowed as a tax deduction, increasing taxable income.
Capital allowances
Statutory allowances (Special Initial Allowance, wear and tear, scrapping allowance) replace accounting depreciation as relief for qualifying assets used in the trade.
Entertainment
Entertainment expenditure is specifically prohibited as a deduction, even where a genuine business purpose exists.
IMTT
Intermediated Money Transfer Tax charged on electronic payments is treated as an allowable deduction, so it is not added back.
Bad debts
Specific debts that were previously taxed and have genuinely become irrecoverable may be deducted; general provisions and IFRS 9 expected credit losses may not.
Tax losses
Assessed losses agreed through tax computations may be carried forward and set against future taxable income, subject to statutory time limits.
Donations
Only qualifying donations to approved recipients are deductible, and several categories are capped at a statutory maximum.
Related parties and thin capitalisation
Interest on related-party debt above the prescribed debt-to-equity ratio may be disallowed, and related-party fees require transfer pricing support.
QPDs and the AIDS Levy
Companies pay tax quarterly at 10%, 25%, 30% and 35% of estimated annual tax. The AIDS Levy is 3% of the income tax chargeable, not 3% of taxable income.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Zimbabwe corporate income tax rate?
Ordinary companies are taxed at 25% of taxable income, plus a 3% AIDS Levy charged on the income tax itself. That gives an effective 25.75% of taxable income.
Why is accounting depreciation added back?
Zimbabwe income tax gives relief through capital allowances rather than accounting depreciation, so depreciation is added back and qualifying capital allowances are deducted separately.
Is IMTT deductible for company tax in Zimbabwe?
Yes. Intermediated Money Transfer Tax is now treated as an allowable deduction, so it is no longer added back in the computation.
How are Zimbabwe QPDs calculated?
Quarterly Payment Dates apply 10%, 25%, 30% and 35% of estimated annual tax across the four quarters, payable on the dates set out in the ZIMRA public notice for the year.
